SUBSTANCE: invention relates to compositions of crude mixtures for producing expanded clay and can be used in the industry of structural materials. The crude mixture for producing expanded clay consists of clay, an additive and water. The additive used is a water-hydrocarbon emulsion from treatment facilities of oil refineries consisting of 30-70 wt % water, with the following ratio of components, wt %: water-hydrocarbon emulsion 15.0-23.5, clay - the balance. The amount of water in the premix is equal to 18-20 wt %.

EFFECT: high strength and low packed density of expanded clay with low burning temperature of the material.
