FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: present invention relates to a method of producing an acrylic monomer having two or more quaternary ammonium groups, and obtaining polymers from such a monomer. Described is a method of producing a monomer (IV-a), having an ethylenically unsaturated group and two or more quaternary ammonium groups per molecule, by reacting: (a) reacting excess monomer (I-a) with a halohydroxyalkyl(trialkyl)quaternary ammonium salt (II-a), where R8 is chlorine, X- is chlorine, according to the scheme given in claim 1, (b) monitoring the pH of the aqueous medium least not latter than the time when all reactants have been added to aqueous medium until completion of the reaction, and (c) adjusting the pH of the aqueous medium to a value greater than or equal to 9 and maintaining that pH level from the time, after all reactants have been added to aqueous medium, when the reaction mixture exhibits an apparent minimum pH value until completion of the reaction. Described also is a method of producing polymers (VII-a) according to the scheme given in claim 2, by reacting acrylic acid (VI-a) with a bis-quaternary monomer (IV-a) obtained as described above, where the index m is an integer from about 800 to 6000, and index n is an integer from about 400 to 3000, in the presence of a polymerisation initiator.
EFFECT: obtaining a monomer and a polymer characterised by low content of impurities and unreacted monomer.
