SUBSTANCE: invention can be used when searching for and identifying submarine vessels using on-board magnetic measurement equipment, particularly scalar magnetometers, mounted on a mobile carrier. Disclosed is a method of searching for and identifying submarine vessels, according to which in the search areas, where the angle J of magnetic inclination of the induction vector of the geomagnetic field satisfies the condition |J|<20°, examination of a given search area is carried out by boards corresponding to magnetic headings w=90° and 270°, and in search areas, where |J|>20°, examination is carried out with boards corresponding to magnetic headings w=0° and 180°.
EFFECT: high probability of correct detection and corresponding low probability of missing a target by selecting headings of the carrier which enable to maximise statistics of magnetometric detection in a given search area of the submarine vessel.
