SUBSTANCE: one version involves providing water and a water-soluble oxygen-containing hydrocarbon, including a C₁₊O₁₊ hydrocarbon, in an aqueous liquid phase and/or vapour phase, providing H₂, conducting liquid and/or vapour-phase catalytic reaction of the oxygen-containing hydrocarbon with H₂ in the presence of a deoxygenation catalyst at deoxygenation temperature and at deoxygenation pressure to obtain a reaction stream of oxygenate which contains a C₁₊O_1-3 hydrocarbon, and conducting liquid and/or vapour-phase catalytic reaction of the oxygenate in the presence of a condensation catalyst at condensation temperature and at condensation pressure to obtain a C_4-30 compound, where the C_4-30 compound includes a compound selected from a group consisting of C_4-30 alcohol, C_4-30 ketone, C_4-30 alkane, C_4-30 alkene, C_5-30 cycloalkane, C_5-30 cycloalkene, aryl, condensed aryl and mixture thereof; and where (a) the deoxygenation catalyst and the condensation catalyst are chemically different, or (b) deoxygenation temperature ranges from about 80°C to about 300°C, and condensation temperature ranges from about 325°C to about 375°C. The invention also relates to apparatus for realising said method.
