FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: fuel element cladding tube is made from alternating layers of nanocrystalline silicon carbide and separating layers of high-temperature material whose structure is different from that of silicon carbide, and plugs at both ends of the tube are made from silicon carbide which prevents penetration of gases through the tube. The method of making said fuel element is based on heating a graphite rod to temperature of 1300-1600°C in a mixture of gases which corresponds to material of the layer of the tube, and alternate replacement of said mixture to form another layer of the tube. A layer of nanocrystalline silicon carbide is formed using a mixture of gases which contains hydrides and chlorides of silicon and carbon.
EFFECT: high safety of the fuel element, simplification thereof and low production costs thereof.
