SUBSTANCE: method of determining contamination of water with diesel fuel, involving sample collection, concentration of impurities, chromatographic analysis with separation of the concentrate on a capillary column and mass-selective detection while raising temperature from 35°C to 280°C, selecting on the chromatogram as reference compounds decylbenzene, iso-undecylbenzene, pentadecylbenzene, tetradecylbenzene and tridecylbenzene, characterised by that contamination of water with diesel fuel is determined from the ratios of concentration of the references matching predetermined (found) values: S_DB/S_iso-UB=0.61±0.18; S_tdb/(S_Tridb+S_pdb)-0.39±0.11; S_db, S_iso-UB, S_PDB, S_TDB and S_TriDB denote the area of peaks of decylbenzene (DB), iso-undecylbenzene (iso-UB), pentadecylbenzene (PDB), tetradecylbenzene (TDB) and tridecylbenzene (TriDB) on reconstructed chromatograms on selective ions (for DB, TriDB, TDB and PDB on an ion with mass to charge ratio m/z=91, for iso-UB - m/z=105), corresponding to concentrations of said compounds in the sample.

EFFECT: high reliability of identifying diesel fuel during water contamination irrespective of how long the contaminant has been in the water.
