FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: in the method of determining the depth of a water body using a side-scanning sonar, involving emission of a hydroacoustic signal towards the bottom and receiving reflected signals from two points lying on the vertical at a given distance, measuring the time delay of arrival of in-phase, the angle of roll of the antenna carrier and determining, based on the obtained data, the direction of arrival of in-phase signals and the unknown depth of the water body, there is further determining of coordinates of the reflecting (or scattering) layers on each "emit-receive" cycle; measurement results in neighbouring cycles are synchronised when receiving reflected signals differing on frequency characteristics; when determining the angle of roll, successive correction of angular and vertical displacements is performed for each measurement cycle. The side-scanning sonar for determining the depth of a water body, having operably connected first and second antenna, and operably connected transmitting unit, receiving and measuring unit, control unit, computer and recorder, the transmitting unit includes a pumping signal generator, the receiving and measuring unit includes a compensator, the transmitting unit is in form of a parametric radiating channel capable of correcting phase and amplitude of received signals.
EFFECT: high reliability of surveying the bottom of a water body.
