FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: invention can be used in chemical, metallurgical and petrochemical industry when purifying waste water from mercury. The method involves treating water with sodium sulphide in the presence of cellulose fibres dispersed in the water to form solid treatment products in form of a composite material which consists of said fibres and sorbed chemically deposited mercury sulphide particles. The cellulose fibres contain, wt %: at least 94% fibres with length of not more than 1.23 mm and at least 54% fibres with length of not more than 0.63 mm. The cellulose fibres are dispersed in water in amount of 40-150 mg/dm3. The composite material is removed from the treated water by pressure flotation with mercury sulphide content therein of 50-300 pts.wt per 100 pts.wt cellulose fibres.
EFFECT: method cuts duration of the purification process, simplifies processing of solid purification products, enables to carry out the purification process in continuous mode at the rate of formation of waste water.
