SUBSTANCE: invention relates to chemistry and more specifically to production of catalysts for deep hydrofining oil fractions and can be used in oil refining and petrochemical industry. Described is a method of preparing a catalyst, involving impregnation of a support with a solution of group VI metals and cobalt nitrate, wherein a combined impregnating solution, which contains a phosphomolybdic heteropolycomplex with molar ratio Mo:P equal to n=9 and 12 and acetic acid in ratio Mo/CH₃COOH equal to 2-4, is prepared. Described is a catalyst for hydrofining oil fractions, which contains cobalt oxide and a phosphomolybdic heteropolycomplex with molar ratio Mo:P equal to 2-4, with the following content of components, wt %: CoO 4.0, MoO₃ 14.0-19.0, P₂O₅ 0.6-1.0, aluminium oxide 76.0-81.4.

EFFECT: disclosed is a method of making a hydrofining catalyst with a defined degree of polymerisation of particles of the molybdenum phase, which is modified with phosphorus and promoted with cobalt in a strictly set ratio to molybdenum and a catalyst for hydrofining oil fractions, which contains cobalt and a phosphomolybdic heteropolycomplex, where the molar ratio Mo:P is equal to n=9 and 12.
