SUBSTANCE: device has a video decoder for decoding image data and a subtitle decoder which receives data based on subtitle text. The subtitle data contain a dialogue style unit and a dialogue display unit, which converts each dialogue display unit to a raster image based on the dialogue style unit, and controls output of the converted dialogue display unit synchronised with the decoded image data. The dialogue style unit contains a plurality of screen server display styles and a plurality of colour palettes to be applied to the dialogue display unit. Each dialogue display unit contains dialogue text information, time of output information which indicates the time at which dialogue text information is to be displayed on the screen, and style link information which indicates the screen saver display style from a plurality of screen saver display styles. The plurality of colour palettes define colours to be applied to the dialogue text information.
EFFECT: enabling display of subtitles in multiple languages.
