SUBSTANCE: device has, along the axis of propagation of an atomic beam, an atomic beam source and a unit for generating an inhomogeneous magnetic field, as well as series-connected backward optical radiation source and acoustooptical modulator. Between the output of the atomic beam source and the input of the unit for generating an inhomogeneous magnetic field there is an atomic beam shutter, the control input of which is connected to the first output of the control unit, the second output of which is connected to the control input the unit for generating an inhomogeneous magnetic field and the control input of the backward optical radiation source. The control unit is designed such that the duration of control pulses Timpi1 and T impi2, generated synchronously and with the same period at the first and second outputs of said control unit, satisfy the condition Timpi1<Timpi2. The backward optical radiation source has series-connected stabilised laser source and beam shutter, wherein the control input of the beam shutter forms the control input of the backward optical radiation source.
EFFECT: design of a Zeeman atomic beam retarder with smaller size and power consumption.
