FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to symbol encoding/decoding and more specifically to an entropy encoding/decoding method based on Huffman coding and employs multidimensional codewords. In the symbol encoding method, it is determined whether a symbol can be encoded with a codeword of a first codebook. If so, the codeword for the symbol is selected from the first codebook. Otherwise the codeword is selected from the first codebook which indicates that the symbol cannot be encoded with the codeword of the first codebook, and the symbol is divided into a plurality of first sub-symbols, and for at least one of the first sub-symbols, the codeword is selected from a second codebook. A corresponding decoding method is described.

EFFECT: increase in number of dimensions of the symbol to provide better adaptation of the length of the codeword to symbol probability and better use of statistical relationships between neighbouring sub-symbols.
