FIELD: information technology.

SUBSTANCE: configuration of a synchronisation network node involves determining information on synchronisation sources of a plurality of synchronisation trails for passing synchronisation information from a synchronisation source to a node to provide a synchronisation reference signal. After determining automatically synchronisation transmission characteristics of trails which use packet-based communication, the trails are compared automatically, using their source information and their synchronisation transmission characteristics, for selecting which of these trails to use for providing the synchronisation reference signal for the node (N).

EFFECT: compared to a selection made based on source alone, using the synchronisation transmission characteristics of packet-based parts can enable a better choice of trail, and can enable comparison with synchronous type trails, and so enable hybrid synchronisation networks to be configured and maintained.
