SUBSTANCE: invention relates to an operating device for controlling operation of at least one low-pressure mercury discharge lamp (12), having a first (14a) and a second electrode coil (14b), with an input for connecting supply voltage, an output for connecting at least one low-pressure mercury discharge lamp (12), a device (24) for providing a parameter which is correlated with mercury vapour pressure in the low-pressure mercury discharge lamp (12), a microcontroller (38) which is connected to the device (24) for providing a parameter correlated with mercury vapour pressure, and the output of the operating device and is configured to provide at the output a signal for controlling operation of at least one low-pressure mercury discharge lamp (12), wherein the signal is characterised by at least one operating parameter of the lamp which depends on the parameter which is correlated with mercury vapour pressure. The device (24) for providing the parameter which is correlated with mercury vapour pressure of the low-pressure mercury discharge lamp (12) has a device for determining radiation spectra (18a, 20, 26, 28, 30) of at least given spectral ranges, having a light receiving device (18a) placed on the beam path of the low-pressure mercury discharge lamp (12). The invention also relates to a corresponding method of controlling operation of the low-pressure mercury discharge lamp.
