Disclosed is a global system for mobile communications (GSM) which supports a multi-carrier operating mode on a downlink and/or uplink for a mobile station; the mobile station receives a multiple carrier assignment for a first link in the GSM network, receives the an assignment of at least one carrier for a second link in the GSM network and exchanges data with the GSM network through the multiple carriers for the first link and at least through one carrier for the second link; the first link can be a downlink and the second link can be an uplink or vice-versa; the mobile station can receive data on multiple carriers simultaneously for the multi-carrier operating mode on a downlink; the mobile station can transmit data at multiple carriers simultaneously for the multi-carrier operating mode on an uplink.
