SUBSTANCE: invention relates to transmission of image data for displaying stereoscopic images. Disclosed is a digital display device interface which transmits stereoscopic image data from a first audiovisual device to a second audiovisual device. Stereoscopic image data components are merged and inserted into an element carrying image data, wherein overhead information is used to identify or decode stereoscopic image data and is transmitted in elements carrying auxiliary data. Elements carrying auxiliary data are transmitted in retrace blanking periods of horizontal or vertical scanning and can contain isolated high definition multimedia interface (HDMI) data packets. Stereoscopic image data can also be sent through an auxiliary data transmission channel. The auxiliary data transmission channel may form part of the same cable used to support the main channel of the interface of the display device, a separate cable or a wireless link.
EFFECT: designing an alternative method of delivering stereoscopic image data through a digital display interface.
