FIELD: physics, optics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means of processing stacks of sheets (SS) in a bundle (5), particularly a bundle of banknotes. The method comprises successively splitting stacks of sheets (SS), each carrying multiple security prints arranged in a matrix of rows and columns, into successive groups of bundles of bands (S; S*), successively splitting the groups of bundles of bands (S; S*) into successive groups (2) of ordered bundles (5) of securities, counting the number of substrates in each bundle of bands (S; S*) before splitting into successive groups (2) of ordered bundles (5); said counting includes reading at least one image (I) of at least a portion of a longitudinal side (10) consisting of bundles of bands (S; S*), when said bands (S; S*) advance in a direction (A) of movement, parallel to the longitudinal side (10) of bundles of bands (S; S*); and processing said image (I) to determine the number of substrates in the bundle of bands (S; S*). The invention also discloses an apparatus for implementing said method.
EFFECT: high reliability of counting banknotes using optical devices.
