SUBSTANCE: invention relates to contactless counting of flat items, particularly banknotes. The method includes obtaining a sample image of part of a side of the stack of substrates, containing information on contrast, representing the edges of the substrates, primarily passing along a first direction in the sample image. Image processing includes applying to at least one target region (20) in the sample image (10) anisotropic diffusion to obtain a processed image, primarily containing a matched set of continuous lines representing the edges of the substrates; The number of edges of the substrates in said processed image are counted.
EFFECT: high counting accuracy owing to use of anisotropic diffusion, which enables to preserve linear structures in the processed image.
