FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: vacuum-plasma application of a multi-layer coating is performed. First the lower layer of zirconium nitride is applied. Then the upper layer of titanium, silicon and chrome compound nitride is applied at their ratio, wt %: titanium 87.1-90.5, silicon 1.0-1.4, chrome 8.5-11.5. Coating layers are applied by three cathodes applied horizontally in one plane. The first cathode is made from alloy of titanium and silicon. The second one is made from zirconium and is arranged oppositely to the first one. The third cathode is made as composite from titanium and chrome and is arranged between them. The lower layer is applied using the second cathode, and the upper layer - using the first and third cathodes.
EFFECT: increased serviceability of a cutting tool.
