SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a communication method. A method of monitoring and controlling consumption of resources, which is executed by a concentrator connected between a plurality of remote units and a control server, wherein the method includes steps of: (i) receiving and storing property data associated with a remote unit including a microprocessor and a measuring device for measuring usage of a resource at a consumer's premises, the property data representing a profile of the remote unit and including communication parameters and device parameters, wherein the communication parameters represent communication protocols and associated equipment supported by said microprocessor; (ii) receiving message data representing a request associated with the remote unit from the management server; (iii) generating response data representing a response to the request based on the message data and the stored property data; and (iv) sending the response data to one of the remote unit and the management server, as determined by the request based on the message data, wherein the property data are used to determine an available link for use to send response data to the remote unit.
