The device comprises a pre-quantiser of a first, adaptive codebook excitation residue and a CELP updating codebook search module responsive to a second excitation residue produced from the first, adaptive codebook excitation residue. In a CELP decoder, a combined updating codebook comprises a de-quantiser of pre-quantised coding parameters into a first excitation contribution and a CELP updating codebook structure responsive to CELP updating codebook parameters to produce a second excitation contribution.
EFFECT: enabling fast search even with very large codebooks.
