FIELD: agriculture.
SUBSTANCE: for breeding stiff-tailed ducks Oxyura leucocephala the birds are managed during the reproduction period in areas of habitat with nesting, the breeding stock is fed daily with a mixture of plant and animal feeds, lekking is carried out, mating of the birds, egg-laying and hatching eggs to hatching the nestlings, the nestlings are fed with adult females. The areas of habitat of the stiff-tailed ducks with nesting during lekking, mating, laying eggs by a female, brooding in nests and rearing of the nestlings under the female are paired cages designed for one pair of birds and their offspring, each of which consists of a pool of water, a feeding site and a nesting niche. For breeding the mature pairs of birds with males are selected, which have feathers mewed into the breeding colour. The males are removed from the females into an adjacent room of the paired cage after laying several eggs or at the beginning of brooding. When growing hatchlings, which are with the female in the cage, during the first 7-10 days of their lives the live feed is placed in the pool with water: daphnia or bloodworm, and plants such as duckweed and pondweed which serve as food for the ducklings followed by their gradual transfer to feeding with a mixture of feed for young birds and adults. By 4 weeks of age the nestlings are transferred for management to the cages for the breeding stock where they are managed until autumn separately from the adult birds. Feeding the birds is carried out at least 7 times a day with a mixture of the feed for the young and adult birds, containing steamed cereal of grains, minced boiled meat, minced boiled fish, dry gammarus, boiled chicken egg, finely grated fresh carrots, finely cut fresh herbs, nettle flour, shells or shell rock, coarse sand, vitamins "Ultravit".
EFFECT: efficient recovery of the population of stiff-tailed ducks Oxyura leucocephala and the possibility to study the biology of the species.
