FIELD: physics, navigation.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to radar location of extended targets and can be used to measure the altitude and component velocities of aircraft. The method includes vertical probing of the earth's surface with a radar signal through a widely directional antenna, coherent reception of the reflected signal to obtain a two-dimensional radar image of the area in range - Doppler frequency coordinates, primary estimation of the altitude of the aircraft as the minimum, multiple measurement averaged range to points of the radar image, which exceed the detection threshold, finding a radar image maximum contrast curve in range - Doppler frequency coordinates, using an iteration method to refine the hypothesis of the measured parameters by calculating the maximum contrast curve corresponding to the hypothesis, generating an error signal of the maximum contrast curve of the hypothesis with respect to the maximum contrast curve of the radar image, converting the error signal of the contrast curve into an error signal of measured parameters, summation thereof with the refined hypothesis, repeating iterations and outputting, in tracking mode, the measured parameters of altitude, vertical and ground velocity components of the user.
EFFECT: single-beam measurement of the velocity of aircraft velocity based on a radar altimeter, which enables to measure the altitude and velocity components of the aircraft with smaller dimensions of the antenna system.
