SUBSTANCE: invention relates to production of a novel azo compound and a pigment dispersant, as well as a pigment composition, a pigment dispersion and toner containing the azo compound. An azo compound of general formula (1) , where R₁ denotes an alkyl group containing 1-6 carbon atoms, or a phenyl group; R₂-R₆ denotes a hydrogen atom or a substitute of general formula (2) , where P₁ denotes a polymeric component; L₁ denotes an alkylene group containing 1-3 carbon atoms, or an arylene group containing 6-10 carbon atoms, and * denotes a bonding site; R₇-R₁₁ denotes a hydrogen atom, a COOR₁₂ group or a CONR₁₃R₁₄ group; and each R₁₂-R₁₄ denotes a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group containing 1-3 carbon atoms.

EFFECT: invention enables to obtain a pigment dispersant, having high affinity to pigments, as well as toner with high chromaticity and good colour hue.
