FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a pigment paste, as well as the use of an aqueous dispersion of a copolymer for dispersing pigments for an effect. Pigment paste includes at least one aqueous dispersion that contains at least one copolymer, and at least one pigment. Said copolymer is obtained as follows: (I) first loading the aqueous dispersion of at least one polyurethane and then (II) polymerising a mixture of olefinically unsaturated monomers in the presence of the polyurethane from step (I), where (a) a water-soluble initiator is used, (b) olefinically unsaturated monomers are measured in such a way that the concentration is 6.0 wt. %, in terms of the total amount of olefinically unsaturated monomers used for the polymerisation, in the reaction solution is not exceeded throughout the reaction, and (c) the mixture of olefinically unsaturated monomers comprises at least one polyolefinically unsaturated monomer containing at least one monomer based on (meth)acrylate, and at least one olefin mono-unsaturated monomer containing at least one monomer based on (meth)acrylate, or at least one vinyl unsaturated monomer. Weight ratio of the pigment to the copolymer is more than 1.5.

EFFECT: resulting pigment pastes are used to obtain coating compositions, especially waterborne primers, in the automotive industry.
