SUBSTANCE: invention relates to data processing and specifically to image processing methods and systems, and can be used to form, store and load a bitstream of an encoded image in video processing devices. An image processing system comprises a JPEG encoder 1, which is connected to an original image source 8 and external memory 7, a JPEG decoder 2, which is connected to a decoded data cache 3, which is connected to an image processor 6 and an encoded data cache 4, which is connected to the external memory 7, the JPEG decoder 2 and a microunit length cache 5, which is connected to the external memory 7. The image processor can be made in the form of a graphics processing unit (GPU).

EFFECT: providing optimum usage of external memory and controlling the external memory capacity of an on-chip computer system by compressing the image and storing the compressed image in the external memory in a manner which allows to minimise access by the image processor to the external memory and provides access to an arbitrary part of the image in the external memory.
