SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for spatial reproduction of sound. An apparatus for spatial reproduction of sound has a receiving device for receiving a multichannel audio signal. An analyser determines the spatial property of the multichannel audio signal, such as space complexity or organisation. A selection process then selects a reproduction mode from a plurality of sound reproduction modes, wherein multichannel sound reproduction modes employ different spatial rendering techniques. A reproduction circuit the drives a set of loudspeakers in order to reproduce the multichannel audio signal using the selected reproduction mode. Switching between reproduction modes can be fast (for example, in the order of 100 ms to 10 s), thereby facilitating short-term adaptation of the reproduction mode to signal characteristics. The approach can particularly improve spatial perception for the listener.
EFFECT: improved spatial perception when listening.
