SUBSTANCE: invention relates to means for encoding audio signals. One or more downmix signals are provided based on at least two audio input signals. One or more parameters are provided describing the relationship between the input audio signals. Parameter of the de-correlation method is provided describing which decorrelation mode should be used on the side of the audio decoder. Parameter of the decorrelation method is selectively provided in order to signal one of the three modes of operation of the audio decoder. First mode in which mixing is allowed between various rendered audio signals when combining these audio signals or their scaled version with one or more de-correlated audio signals. Second mode in which mixing between different rendered audio signals is not allowed when combining these audio signals or their scaled version with decorrelated audio signals.

EFFECT: increasing the efficiency of coding of three-dimensional audio scenes.
