FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to field of chemical technology, in particular to technology for obtaining adsorbent-coagulant, intended for application in field of ecology for purification of water objects: natural water bodies or industrial effluents and can be used at alumina-producing enterprises to obtain additional trade product from technogenic waste of amumina production - red mud. Method for obtaining adsorbent-coagulant based on red mud of alumina production includes acidic processing of red mud to activate it and further stages of obtained suspension filtration, sediment separation, its drying and milling. Activation of red mud is carried out in one stage, which is realised by washing red mud by decantation with 6-10 mol/l solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) in ratio s:l=1:3-5 with continuous mixing for 1 hour at room temperature to pH level not higher than 4.

EFFECT: simplification of process of obtaining effective coagulant-adsorbent with increased adsorption ability.
