FIELD: physics.
SUBSTANCE: at the first processing step, each image of a character is associated with a plurality of potential graphemes. At the second processing step, each image of a character is evaluated relative to the plurality of potential graphemes detected for the image of the character at the first step. When processing potential graphemes, methods and systems presented herein monitor the progress of detecting a suitable grapheme and, if insufficient progress is observed, terminate processing of potential graphemes and recognise the image of the character as a region containing a non-character element in the image of a scanned document or other image containing text. Further, each successive group of one or more potential graphemes is evaluated relative to the possible image of a character.
EFFECT: high efficiency of character recognition by cutting document processing time.
