SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to techniques for recognition of characters corresponding to characters images, obtained from a scanned document image or other image containing a text. Disclosed is a system for optical recognition of characters. System comprises one or more processors, one or more memory modules, one or more memory devices. Machine code instructions stored in memory devices, when executed by a processor, the system for optical recognition of characters to process a scanned document image containing a text is controlled by performing identifying character images in the scanned document image. For each recognized character image, starting from a forest solutions root node, stored in the system for optical recognition of characters, recursive bypassing of forest solutions is performed. In each node one or more classifiers recognize a character image until solution "found" is received for the given character image.

EFFECT: technical result is optical character recognition on the document image.
