SUBSTANCE: method includes, when labelling each timber unit, randomly selecting a portion of the surface of the unit on which a special optical label is applied, thereby enabling determination of the region of the surface for which, based on the number and/or list of relative coordinates of intersections of a predetermined number of imaginary lines, having a predetermined position relative to the optical label, and elements of the unique natural structure of the selected portion of the surface, a data set is created and stored for further use, said data set uniquely identifying the labelled timber unit. When identifying a timber unit, the position of the optical label on the surface of the unit is determined, which is then used to determine the region of the surface for which an identification data set is created using a similar method and the unit is identified based on the match of the created data set with one of the sets stored earlier.
EFFECT: invention enables to identify each unit of labelled timber based on data characterising the natural structure of the region selected on the surface of said unit with a special optical label, and also minimises the amount of data needed for identification and speeds up the identification procedure.
