SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of operating a portable terminal, which can diagnose a home appliance using a portable terminal. A method of operating a portable terminal, comprising steps of: displaying a recording menu through a display unit; recording a modulated signal sound received through a microphone according to the recording menu selection, wherein said signal sound includes product information of the home appliance; retrieving product information from the recorded signal sound; performing diagnosis based on the retrieved product information; and displaying the diagnosis result through the display unit.
EFFECT: effective diagnosis of home appliances using a portable terminal.
