FIELD: chemistry.
SUBSTANCE: method includes a step of forming pentaerythritol mono- and trichlorohydrin by reacting pentaerythritol with thionyl chloride in the presence of N,N-dimethyl formamide at high temperature, and then reacting the obtained mixture with thionyl chloride in two steps: at the first step to obtain pentaerythritol monochlorohydrin with 30-35% of the calculated amount of thionyl chloride at 60-70°C, and at the second step the remaining amount of thionyl chloride is added at 100-140°C to obtain pentaerythritol trichlorohydrin, and 3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxetane is separated by extraction with an organic solvent.
EFFECT: simple process due to the order of mixing reactants, which minimises the formation of the pentaerythritol trichlorohydrin by-product and ensures high selectivity.
