FIELD: physics, computer engineering.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method, a computer readable storage device and a computer system for performing zone classification of electronic mail messages. The method comprises receiving, by an electronic mail client program, the first and second electronic mail addresses of recipients which are external with respect to an organisation; sending the said addresses to the electronic mail server of the organisation which determines whether or not the electronic mail address of a recipient includes an electronic mail address domain associated with a trusted partner of the organisation; receiving, from the said server, electronic mail zone classification for the first and second electronic mail addresses of the recipients which include one of a general internet zone and a restricted zone for the first address and a trusted partner zone for the second address; displaying the electronic mail zone classification in the displayed electronic mail message; processing the said message as a set of separate messages addressed to the first and second addresses; performing a policy action with respect to the first electronic mail message and sending to the electronic mail server of the organisation the second electronic mail message without using the said policy action.
