SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of oxidising an alkyl aromatic compound, which includes contacting an alkyl aromatic compound, a solvent containing precursor of at least one ionic liquid bromine source, catalyst and oxidant to obtain an oxidation product containing at least one compound selected from an aromatic alcohol, aromatic aldehyde, aromatic ketone and aromatic carboxylic acid, wherein solvent additionally includes a carboxylic acid with weight ratio of carboxylic acid to ionic liquid from 1:16 to 16:1 and weight ratio of solvent and an alkyl aromatic compound in mixture ranges from 1:1 to 10:1 and oxidation product contains less than 2,500 ppm 4-carboxybenzaldehyde.
