SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method for extracting information from detected characteristic signals. Data stream derived from electromagnetic radiation emitted or reflected by an object is received and a plurality of characteristic index elements varying over time can be extracted therefrom. Index elements comprise physiological information indicative of periodic vital signal and a disturbing signal component. For eliminating disturbing signal component to a great extent, characteristic index elements can be projected to a disturbance-reduced index element having a distinct orientation in relation to a presumed orientation of disturbing signal component. Disturbance-reduced index element is chosen so as to reflect a dominant main orientation and length of disturbing signal component over time. Consequently, mainly genuine physiological information extracted from data stream in this way can be utilised for determining periodic vital signal.
EFFECT: obtaining required characteristic signals with high accuracy.
