FIELD: geophysics.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to geophysics and can be used for locating a sound source. Method and system are provided, in which acoustic signals received acoustic sensors comprising fibre-optic sensors are processed in order to determine position of source or sources of acoustic signals. Method and system are able to determine position of several acoustic sources simultaneously, by measuring corresponding several acoustic signals. Furthermore, strength of acoustic signal or signals can be determined. Location of acoustic source may be overlaid on a map of an area being monitored, or be used to generate an alarm if perceived to correspond to a threat or an intrusion. Alternatively, method and systems can be used to monitor a hydraulic fracturing process. Declared method and system provide two possible versions of data processing. According to first version, processing of received acoustic signals includes several cost functions by cross-correlation of received signals. According to second version, processing of received acoustic signals includes separation of received acoustic signals on their frequency components.
EFFECT: technical result is high of accuracy and reliability of determining sound source.
