FIELD: metallurgy.
SUBSTANCE: method involves measurement of temperature of slab surface by means of, embedded in walls of a crystalliser, a first group of thermoelectric cells of area of immersion nozzle and a second group in an area further from immersion nozzle, determination of difference in readings of thermoelectric cells of first and second groups, diagnosis of longitudinal cracks from said difference in readings of a specified threshold value. Performing preliminary chemical analysis of cast steel and based on statistical data on cracking casts poured earlier, determining a parameter which characterises susceptibility of steel to formation of longitudinal cracks. For melting steel, prone to cracking, correcting threshold value of difference in readings of thermoelectric cells towards reduction, and for melting of steel not prone to cracking, correcting towards increase.
EFFECT: higher reliability of diagnosis of longitudinal cracks.
