SUBSTANCE: group of inventions relates to downhole rotary lock mechanisms and methods of transmitting torque to downhole tool. Downhole rotary locking mechanism comprises tubular housing with longitudinal through hole with inner wall; drive gear located in longitudinal through hole of tubular housing, wherein said drive gear wheel includes a peripheral edge attached to inner wall of longitudinal through hole of tubular housing, and has an upper part with multiple teeth of gear wheel, arranged around central longitudinal through hole through said drive gear; driven gear, movably arranged in longitudinal through hole of tubular housing, wherein said driven gear has central longitudinal through hole and a lower part comprising multiple gear teeth; output drive shaft arranged longitudinally in a longitudinal through hole of tubular housing and in longitudinal through hole of driven gear; and screw with spherical end attached to tubular housing of rotary locking mechanism. Said screw with spherical end is located in circular peripheral groove located on outer cylindrical surface of driven gear and connected with spiral curved groove located on outer cylindrical surface of driven gear wheel.

EFFECT: transmission of additional torque to drilling bit during drilling through a layer, which causes resistance to rotation.
