FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a method of producing polystyrene, having high melt flow index. Described is a method of producing polystyrene, having weight-average molecular weight (Mw) in range of 120,000-160,000, polydispersity in range of 4-6 and melt flow index equal to at least 40 g/10 min, by feeding styrene into a reaction system, through which styrene passes as a component of a reaction mixture, while polymerising at same time, wherein reaction system includes an initial reaction zone (100) and further reaction zone (200), where method includes steps of: polymerising styrene in initial reaction zone with formation of polystyrene with Mw higher than 300,000 and polydispersity in range of 1.5-2.5, wherein 10-30 wt% styrene fed into initial reaction zone is polymerised; and polymerisation of styrene remaining in reaction mixture in zone of further reaction, wherein chain transfer agent is mixed with reaction mixture at beginning of said reaction zone and, optionally, in one or more additional points inside said reaction zone. Polystyrene obtained using said method is subsequently used for production of foaming polystyrene granules or foamed polystyrene panels.

EFFECT: technical result is obtaining polystyrene with high melt flow index.
