SUBSTANCE: method involves the following steps: reaction of a polar substance containing a compound which contains a carbonyl group, and which is contained in α-methyl styrene, in the presence of a basic compound, wherein basicity of the basic compound is equal to or greater than 10 on acid dissociation constant pKa of the conjugated acid of the basic substance; separation of the component with low boiling point, obtained during the reaction, from the mixture of the product of reaction of the polar substance containing a compound which contains a carbonyl group and α-methyl styrene; and separation of α-methyl styrene from the mixture of the product of the reaction of the polar substance containing a compound which contains a carbonyl group and α-methyl styrene. Disclosed also is a method of producing α-methyl styrene (version) and a method of producing a styrene-based copolymer.
EFFECT: method enables to obtain α-methyl styrene of high purity.
