FIELD: chemistry.

SUBSTANCE: invention refers to the field of analytical chemistry as applied to assessing the total content of organic compounds of one type using optic means. A method includes sampling, hydrocarbon extraction with tetrachloromethane, sorption purification of the extract using Al2O3, measurement of absorbance of the purified extract and calibrating solutions in the IR- spectrum range with several wave number values and plotting a calibrating curve, not less than 15 purified extracts from aqueous solutions with known total contents but different ranges and different ratios of individual hydrocarbons are used as calibrating solutions; the total hydrocarbon content in the water is calculated without reference to standard substance using the formula where Ai is absorbance of sample extract at i-th wave number (measured); Ki is value of regression coefficient at i-th wave number. Regression coefficients are calculated by solving the equation system where aij is absorbance of j-th calibrating solution (extract of aqueous solution with known hydrocarbon content) at j-th wave number (measured); cj is total hydrocarbon content in j-th calibrating solution (known).

EFFECT: increased analysis accuracy is achieved.
