FIELD: oil prospecting methods. SUBSTANCE: invention, in particular, relates to determining hydrocarbon in industrial waste waters or in environmental monitoring. One measures integral intensity of absorption spectra of oil hydrocarbon solutions (or extract solutions) in carbon tetrachloride in two regions: 3150-2994 cm-1 for aromatic moieties and 2994-2899 cm-1 for saturated moieties. Using empirical formula provided in invention, one calculates integral concentration of oil hydrocarbons and estimates hydrocarbon unsaturation rate. EFFECT: increased analytical accuracy. 1 tbl
