FIELD: transportation; engines and pumps.
SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a vehicle engine control system, namely, to automatic engine stopping and starting. Method adjusts conditions for engine stopping in response to operating conditions that are evaluated according to one or more cost functions, constructed according to time since selected conditions are present that allows for stopping engine rotation, cost function weighs lost fuel economy values. Value may be compared to a predetermined value. If the value is larger than the predetermined value, adapted engine stop delay may be decreased. On the other hand, if the engine stopping procedure is interrupted, the adapted engine stop delay may be increased a predetermined amount. In this way, the cost function is the basis for adjusting the engine stop delay time.
EFFECT: technical result is reduced fuel consumption.
