SUBSTANCE: each lighting device transmits modulated light during lighting. When the first source lighting device needs to transmit information to the target lighting device via the lighting system, one or more intermediate lighting devices decode the received light-coded transmissions from the first source lighting device. One or more intermediate lighting devices combine light-coded transmissions from the first source lighting device with light-coded transmissions from the second source lighting device in a broadcasting system. The first source lighting device uses the received broadcast signal from one or more intermediate lighting devices to extract light-coded transmissions from the second source lighting device, eliminating the stored a priori known signal components.
