FIELD: physics, navigation.
SUBSTANCE: invention refers to geophysics and can be used in seismic surveys in ice-covered waters by initial planning of the survey route, crossing the studied area. The initial route is planned based of the initial ice conditions in the studied area, which has ice-covered waters. After the system is prepared, the seismic system is deployed in the water using a research vessel in the studied area. This is typically performed in an area which is relatively free of ice. At least one accompanying vessel shall follow behind the research vessel when it passes the survey route and receives the seismic data. The research vessel tows the seismic system beneath the surface of ice-covered waters to avoid ice. At the same time, the system and operators observe the actual ice conditions in the studied area along the route.
EFFECT: invention improves the accuracy of the obtained data and the efficiency of seismic activities due to the fact that the accompanying vessel can monitor the actual ice conditions along the route of research, allowing non-interrupted movement of the research vessel.
