FIELD: electricity.

SUBSTANCE: essence of the method and the device are based on the use of three damping resistors in order to limit surge voltage, which are simultaneously connected in parallel to the filter capacitor of thyristor-impulse control systems (TICS) at the time of surge voltage initiation and switched off in turns at the moments when the current reaches steady values through inductance of the traction network. Damping resistors are disconnected in series of resistance increasing, the optimal values of which are determined according to analytical formulas obtained on the basis of the criterion of the optimal distribution of electromagnetic energy stored due to short circuits in the inductance of the traction contact network, between the TICS filter capacitor and damping resistors in such a way that the minimum of the voltage global maximums over the entire interval of the surge voltage limit at the TICS input.

EFFECT: increased protection efficiency of the thyristor-impulse control systems of tram cars against commutation surge voltage caused by the discharge of the electromagnetic energy of the inductance of the traction contact network into the filter capacitor of the thyristor-pulse control systems when external short circuits are disconnected.
