SUBSTANCE: aqueous coating composition comprises (A) an aqueous polymer dispersion comprising a film-forming polymer in the form of dispersed polymer particles comprising one P₁ polymer phase and another P₂ polymer phase; wherein the polymer dispersion is produced by free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization comprising the following steps: (i) polymerizing the first M1 loading monomer in non-aqueous medium, containing polymerizable ethylene unsaturated monomer mixture comprising ethylene unsaturated monomer containing carboxylic acid group and ethylene unsaturated monomer containing phosphoric acid group, with formation of P₁ polymer phase; (ii) dispersing P₁ in aqueous medium, and (iii) polymerizing the second M2 loading monomer in aqueous medium in presence of P₁ including ethylene unsaturated polymerized monomeric mixture, different from M1, and including ethylene unsaturated monomer containing 1,2-epoxy group, with the formation of P₂ polymer phase; (B) a hardener capable of reacting with the film-forming polymer.
