SUBSTANCE: in one of the aspects set forth herein, the transmitter transmits synchronization signals in accordance with one or more clearly defined transmission characteristics that allow the receiver to distinguish between the type of transmitter and/or the type of carrier used to transmit the synchronization signals. Different types of transmitters reuse at least some of the same synchronization signal sequences and generation algorithms, but use different transmission parameters to impart one or more recognizable characteristics to the transmitted synchronization signals. In turn, the appropriately configured receiver "knows" which characteristics are associated with which type of transmitter and/or carrier. For example, wireless devices operating in a wireless communication network transmit hardware-generated synchronization signals that re-use at least some of the same sequences used by network base stations to transmit synchronization signals in the network. However, hardware-generated synchronization signals are transmitted using relative positioning or mapping, which is distinct from the network synchronization signals used.
